Sanitized song lyrics for six-year-olds

I often noodle around on my guitar while my daughter is brushing her teeth, getting ready for bed, playing Lego, waving at me frantically to go away, etc. Naturally, I default to the relatively few songs I know how to play. Naturally, those lyrics often include concepts I’m not quite ready to explain to a Very Young Person, so I try to modify them on the fly. Sometimes it works out. Here are a few of those efforts, with apologies to the excellent artists whose music I will totally be playing for her a few years from now, when she’s ready. I would note that it’s not really necessary for things to make a lot of sense, because plenty of songs don’t make much sense (on the surface), anyway, and Sam is used to that. Therefore, I leave a lot of the original lyrics alone. For instance, she doesn’t know what “strung out” means, and she doesn’t ask.

Blister in the sun (Violent Femmes)
[Only the 2nd verse needed any tweaks]

When I’m a-walkin’, I strut my stuff, and I’m so strung out.
I’m high as a kite. I just might stop to check you out

(chorus)  [Avoid speculation about meanings]

Walk down the street, moving my feet, I don’t even know why.
My best friend, she’s at the end, she is waving goodbye.

Seven Nation Army (White Stripes)
[She knows this song by heart, but doesn’t like the “hounds of hell” part]

Don’t wanna hear about it
Every single one has got a story to tell
Everyone knows about it
From the Queen o’ England to the Taco Bell
   [we have tried several variations]

Sunshine of Love (Cream)

It’s getting near dawn,
When lights close their tired eyes
I’ll soon be with you my love,
I’ll bring you a nice surprise  [Now it’s about bringing home a souvenir!]
I’ll be with you darling soon,
I’ll be with you when the stars start falling [easy b/c Sam loves meteor showers]

I’ve been waiting so long
To be where I’m going
In the sunshine of your love

I’m with you my love,
The light’s shining through on you
Yes, I’m with you my love,
It’s the morning and just we two
I’ll stay with you darling now,
I’ll stay with you till the trees all light up  [I never said it was art…]

I’ve been waiting so long
To be where I’m going
In the sunshine of your love

I’m with you my love,
The light’s shining through on you.
Yes, I’m with you my love,
It’s the morning and just we two.
I’ll stay with you darling now,
I’ll stay with you till the trees all light up [Maybe Christmas trees? The sunrise?]

I’ve been waiting so long
I’ve been waiting so long
I’ve been waiting so long
To be where I’m going
In the sunshine of your love
